Smartville Tip Sheet

News From Around The Web

Breaking new! Windows 2000 will be released on February 17th in this country, but the British have already found that its design violates their laws. We have been warning people about this program for a long time. This once again proves we are right. All the suckers out there can buy their dual processor PCs now. You're going to have to rebuy everything again to run this monster. How people keep falling for this I'll never know. Microsoft has released the biggest computer application in the history of the world, but I bet it offers little new you can't do without! Let us know if it does something amazing. I for one want no part of it. I'm sick of them wasting my hardware speed on running bloated applications to mainly serve to strengthen their hold over software developers and PC users.

European countries are considering filing their own monopoly case againt the software giant, Perhaps there is some justice in the world after all. They have done so much harm to those that trusted them that the wheel of karma is finally turning in the other direction. Don't expect them to free your PC because people are finally getting waking up. At this point it's a matter of survial for them. They must continue to increase profits in order to sell stock, and they have always done that through trickery, deception and preventing their customer's from growing.

What's The Deal With Winlunx?

Although the world eagerly awaits an alternative to Windows, both Red Hat, and Corel, are apparently not putting much effort into really challenging the Microsoft product. To date all they've made available is the interface, and a ported version of Word Perfect. They've had more than enough time to come up with a suite! It's almost like they're trying to fail. In case your listening you two, you also need a spread sheet, database, graphics, and a page editing program.

While we are discussing this, let's bring something else up. UNIX, the language upon which Winlinux is based, can run applications across platforms. That means that you can use software written for a wide variety of different machines, and operating system. The obvious question is why has Red Hat created a version of Linux that has to have special software written for it, instead of their interface being able to run your older Windows applications? Those that have joined the Red Hat camp may find they are dealing with a Microsoft junior. I smell a rat! Both Corel and this company are going to have to do much better before I jump on this band wagon.

At this point Microsoft offers more accessories, and a suite products that covers a great deal more in terms of software. Could it be that Corel fears that their Linux version will sell better than the Windows Suite they make? If so, so what! Let's get with it! If they can't do any better, just concede defeat. PC users want applications, not just a better operating system. with only a single program to run.

Smartville Page Network

Smartville has established the first home page network! If you notice, both sites and search engines are working hard to bury home page built by individuals. A visit to Geocities.com neighborhoods, or to Lycos will show you what I mean. If you have a page there, try to find it without using the exact name. We work hard to find foot holds in the glass mountain they have placed in the way of the little guy. Having your home page featured with us lets you ride on our backs, We know how to submit, so CRCS sites place highly in the catagories we submit them in. When people find us, they also find your home page. Those we accept go right in the middle of the main street in our virtual training area. Although we focus on our members pages, we also post pages, and free sites we feel our students will benefit from using. If you'd like to have us review yours, send us an e-mail from the mail drop in Smartville with the URL address, and we'll notify you as to our decision.

User Group Association

We are forming a PC users group association in order to unify scattered organizations, We are looking for computer news letters to post. So If your group has one it would like to have featured, e-mail the link to us. Windows 2000 is prime example of why we need to band together. We invite all that want to increase their power, influence and knowledge base to join us, so if you belong to a group, let your leadership know about this opportunity. We hold an open meeting every Saturday at 12:00 pm EST. You can learn more about it by visiting our Earthlink site. The address is http://home.earthlink.net/~zenji227.

This gathering is in a chat room, so there is no conflict of interest with clubs that meet in the real world. At this time joining this association costs nothing, and participating will get your club publication a link where people from around the world can see it! We will post all computer related news letters that feature tips and information others may find helpful

We intend to be a major force that the computer industry must recognize. Unfortunately, our group only started in January, so we don't have enough members to write complaint letters to scare these companies stopping their nonsense. This should change in the future, No corporate president wants to be greeted by a bag full of complaint letters in the morning. PC user have been meekly going along with whatever the PC industry decided to give them for far too long. If we don't join together, and let our voices be about the thing we like, and don't like about their products, how are they supposed to know our desires? They don't include us in their design process anymore because we remain silent when they force things down our throats. Let's get the respect me deserve as knowledgable customer!

Cheers And Tears

Hats off to Gozilla for making a really good download assistant available for nothing, but a pox on them for tricking people into downloading Netsonic, a program that is supposed to make sites load faster. Don't download this software! It provides very little speed increase, if any at all, and constantly bugs you to read the advertising it displays.

Gator is another winner in my book. It fills in information at sites for you, as long as you use either Netscape or the Internet Explorer, it will pop up and give you the option of filling in forms, user IDs, and passwords for any you've already visited. This program doesn't work with Neoplanet as of yet. As usual, you can get all three of these free downloads by either going to their sites, or from CNET Download If you haven't noticed, it's one of my favorite sites.

Smartville News

New Beginnings

We now have four sites up and running, in addition to our clubs. They are as follows: Geocities, Tripod, AngelfireEarthlink. Why not visit them all in order to see which servers are faster? You can then pick your favorite. They are almost identical, except for the advertising. Checking them out will give you some idea of what you'll have to go through when you start FTPing pages around the Web, All the sites you create have to be administrated and developed. However, your chances of being seen are greatly increased when your link appears in site search engine. An FTP program lets you easily copy all your files from your hard drive, where you should be keeping back up copies of all of them anyway, to another site. Having several URLs has many advantages. In this instance, it lets neighbors, that would never find your page in a dedicated search engine, get a chance to find you through the members page listings, which aren't as crammed with links as the major engines.

Writers Wanted

The Smartville Tip Sheet is looking for writers to submit Web related material. Pieces should be short, as you can see, we use paragraph format, so your work should be condensed into 250 words, or less. If you have news, or opinions you want to express, we've got the forum for you to do it. You can either submit on a free lance basis, or become a staff writer if you'd like to spread your journalistic wings. This News letter is offically released on a monthly basis, but is often updated between releases, so keep checking back, new material may have been added that you haven't read.

New Workshop Time And Day

The Workshop time and day have been changed to make it easier for people overseas to attend. We now meet every Saturday at 12:00 pm EST in the Delphi Computer And Page Building - Free Forum. The Yahoo Page builder still needs a great deal of work, but it does a good job of helping you place graphics, before you get enough experience to get around this shaky application with a HTML editor. If you want to get fancy, you'll have to learn to use code to some extent, and will need a passing knowledge of it to place cut and paste code obtained from other sites. If you don't have a page started, it's OK. We'll teach you how to start one if you come to the workshop.

New Health and Internet Radio links!

We now have four new health links on the page, under the Smartville Clinic, so if you're looking for information related to this subject, you have more places to visit. The two new radio links we put up have less clipping than well know sites, and they offers a wide music selection.

Smartville Visits

At a minimum, those in our course should be visiting our sites at least twice a week. This suggestion is made so that they can observe the changes that have been made. We blaze trails for students to follow in order to help them with their own page designs. For instance, our clubs haven't done a good job of attracting new students, so they are being redesigned, and their titles have been changed. By moving them into different catagories we now get higher placement in site search engines at their prospective locations. This is a trick you'll have to master if you want visitors.

We will start recruting for our page network, and user group association next week through several methods we haven't tried. We'll let you know how this turns out. If you already have a page that you would like us to put up, or are a member of a computer organization that wants to band with other clubs that share the same interests, let us know.

Now it's your turn to voice your opinion. Feel strongly about something you've read in this news letter, or just want to vent on any subject? Then here is your chance. Just click on the graphic below to be taken to our forum, where you can rant and rave to your hearts content.
